The picturesque hamlet of Orient, the easternmost of the North Fork towns, is located 4 miles east of Greenport and 6 miles west of Orient State Park and Orient Point. Nestled in this beautiful marine environment, the village, which is built around the bay, is reminiscent of a small New England town with cedar shake houses, old churches, a designated historic district and no commercial development other than a post office and a general store. The hamlet was originally settled by five families given a land grant by the King of England in the 1600s. Orient was used as a base of operations by British commanders such as Benedict Arnold and local Tories during the American Revolution to conduct raids on Yankee-held Connecticut. |
